It doesn't take much of a difference to be noticed. Players that have played a long time will notice a few mm difference. This is similar to the better players knowing as soon as they have hit the ball whether it is going long even if it misses by a few mm.
I do often hear new players that walk into a table tennis stadium say, "why are the tables so small?" Often if you have played on a table in your garage or shed it takes up the whole shed and looks quite big. When you see the same table in a big hall it often appears to be much smaller. I wouldn't mind a dollar for every time someone has asked me why the tables in a club are smaller than their table at home.
